- BATCH MODE FOR IBM/PC VERSION OF THE CDC-HRA
-
- The following documentation is intended to supplement the
- original documentation supplied with the IBM/PC programs written
- by Arden L. Ashton, Jr., M.D. and Advanced Medical Systems Corp.
- There are a few tricks that we have learned in dealing with the
- Batch Entry mode that should assist you and prevent you from
- perhaps making some of the same mistakes we did.
-
- In order to utilize the Batch Mode (assuming you have already
- met the hardware requirements of min. 128K and double
- density/double sided disk drives) you must first make sure that
- all the main program files and the data tables for the HRA
- program must all be on the same diskette. Also the first step
- once you determine the need to run the batch mode is to make sure
- that a text editor called EDLIN.COM is on your diskette. If
- not, it should be easy to locate the file on a DOS diskette and
- copy.
-
- INSTRUCTIONS:
-
- 1) At the prompt A> type in the following:
-
- A>EDLIN HDATA
-
- 2) If the HDATA file is not already in existence, this first
- step will also create if for you.
-
- 3) You should now see an editor prompt of " * "
-
- a) If you already had the file on disk, chances are there
- should be an example data string for you to use as a model.
-
- b) Type " 1 " which will let you know if there is a data
- example on the file. This will actually request data
- line #1 of the file.
-
- Following is what the string should look like:
-
- *1. EXAMPLE,ONE,J,111111111111,1,1,55,5,7,222,3,0,0,0,0,2,0,0,0,
- 3,22000,99,2,3,2,3,2,2,2,2,123,77,211,1,1,1,2,3,3,3,0,0,0,0,0,2,2
- ,3,1,1,COL,OH
-
- Note: If you do not have the example on your disk, you may use
- this hard copy for your model.
-
- 5) At this point you are ready to enter data. Simple type in
- "2I" and you will get the following prompt:
-
- *2.
-
- 6) If there was no example file on the disk, you will have to
- type in "1I" and would get the following prompt:
-
-
- 7) Type in your data string using either the screen model or
- hard copy model as your format. Type the string in
- continuously using no spaces and separating each data
- element with commas as shown. Press the <RETURN> key only
- after you complete one data string. The machine will
- automatically set you up to enter the next data string.
-
- 8) When you have finished entering all the data strings and
- wish to save what you have entered, use the following
- procedure:
-
- a) Press the <CTRL> and <BREAK> keys simultaneously. You
- will see the " * " prompt appear on the far left
- margin.

- will see the " * " prompt appear on the far left
- margin.
-
- b) You should probably delete the first example file so
- that it does not actually print.
-
- To delete the first record type in "1D". What you
- began typing in as record #2 will now shift up and
- become record #1.
-
- c) In order to save what you have typed, type in "E" -
- this will exit to DOS and save.
-
- HOW TO PRINT THE REPORTS FROM DATA NOW IN STORAGE:
-
- 1) It is very easy to print the Health Risk Appraisals now
- that you have created you data. Before you start, make
- sure that your printer is connected and on-line - that
- you also have enough paper installed to handle the
- volume of data you've entered.
-
- 2) At the A> type in "HRA1".
-
- 3) If there are any problems with the data strings, the
- print may abort. Or, if you have accidentally typed in

- 3) If there are any problems with the data strings, the
- print may abort. Or, if you have accidentally typed in
- an unreasonable number for one of the data elements, it
- may print out a line that, i.e. " XX is not an
- acceptable value for age ". Under certain circum-
- stances, one case may be skipped and the computer will
- analyze and print the next case. However, in many cases
- nothing will happen. DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED!!
-
- 4) You will have to go back to "EDLIN HDATA" and seek out
- your error. I suggest that you obtain a copy of the
- EDLIN Documentation from the IBM DOS Manual. In many
- cases I have found it is a misplaced comma or a period
- inserted instead of a comma. Make sure there are no
- blank spaces. Once you find your error, you will be
- able to use the Function keys described in the Edlin
- Documentation to correct your errors. This is fairly
- simple. Once you do this the first time, you will
- become aware of what to look for and find
